Hey,

I have the almost exact same boat! Mine is a Feather Craft as well. I just picked it up on a farm in Colorado. You may or may not know this, but if you look at the serial on the back you can tell what model it is. Yours looks like a Hawk or a SkiBo. You have a reall gem there! Enjoy.

Ranger Doug,

You're my new hero. I'd first read your name when examining the fine print of that silkscreen poster I bought at Yosemite many years ago. Then I read about how you brought a whole bunch of these things back from extinction into our collective consciousness - long before the simple beauty of WPA posters became hip again. Next I browsed through your blog and found the Katahdin, the travels, and of course the log home with the I-can't-believe-it ain't-a-Hollywood-backdrop views. Well the road trip with the '61 Bambi tops it off.

You're living a picture postcard view of the American Dream, one that you and Martina have written elegantly and uniquely in your own image. Compressed down into one website as it is, it's honestly, truly difficult for me to understand how you pack so much living into a single life - and it's incredibly inspirational.

If you two ever make it to the Chicago area, please oh please look up Melissa and me. We'll take you out for a slice of deep dish pizza, give you a tour of our '62 Globe Trotter and get your feedback on my own series of travel-style posters I've been working on.

All the best in 2010!

I am always able to smell when it is snowing some miles away. To me it has a distinct smell and it is very calming and pleasant.
We recently found a very old gadget that when turned on would make ozone. I later realized that it smells like snow.
So does snow make ozone?
Thank you, Ro

Wow, stunning scenery you have up there at your paradise, although, in the Garden of Eden it must have been warmer, concluded from Adam's fig leaf. Besides these aerials, the vintage pictures are also very illustrative.

A great journey you had down south. I remember Bryce and Zion from a 1976 trip with Helen, love your writing, if my English was better, I would write my travel blog in English.

Doug,

I just finished reading your blog from top to bottom...amazing !! I am now anxiously awaiting the next entry. I have always wanted to see Alaska . After finishing college and my professional football career coming to an unceremonious end (I was cut) I thought about packing my bags and moving north way north (I am originally from Texas) but I couldnít muster up the courage. Instead I moved to Chicago which in turn brought me to England. I also have a fascination for old boats. Believe it or not for some reason I have always loved tug boats. Last year on our annual fishing trip to the Keys I stumbled across the African Queen dry docked in Key Largo, which is the one boat that probably began my dream of owning a classic wooden boat. But taking on those boats as well as that project in Alaska (and law suits)is beyond my wildest imagination. Youíre the dental equivalent to Clutch Cargo. Well done you.
Karen my beautiful wife, is always encouraging me to buy the boat ,stop complaining about getting old (I am embarrassed to say that I have a few years until I hit the half century mark)and take a few more risks in life. We live in a village in Hampshire, England. I am so inspired by the way you restored your log cabin on ìTotland ì it has renewed my enthusiasm to finish decorating our house and then find our farm in the stunning Hampshire countryside. Do keep it going and thanks for inspiration.

All the best
